End of Summer 2024 Tour of the West – 1 – Lake McClure

Posted on September 3, 2024September 3, 2024 by Alex

The blog is back!  And yes, it is definitely due to popular demand.  The fans have spoken, and we have finally listened.  I’m sure you all have so many questions like:  Why did you stop blogging?  Did you also stop RVing too?  Is it because you stopped paying for WordPress hosting?  Did your many fans really convince you to start up the blog again?  Just to get it out of the way, here are your answers:  Because.  No. Also no.  I would never lie about such a thing.

Now that we have all that out of the way, let’s get to it.  Phase 1 of this particular RV adventure is to celebrate Lana’s and my 19th anniversary.  I know what you’re all thinking.  You both can’t possibly be old enough to have been married for 19 years!  Well, it’s true, it will be 19 years this September 4th.  The plan is for us to take a week driving up to Helena Montana, stopping at several National Parks and other destinations along the way.  Helena is where Phase 2 of the RV adventure will begin, more on that later.  This being an anniversary trip, coupled with the fact that school is in session also means that the children have been abandoned with Grandma and other family members (thank you!).

The water level at the lake was WAY lower than it was the last time we were here

Stop 1 on our  adventure is the Horseshoe Bend Campground at Lake McClure in California’s Gold Country.  We decided on Lake McClure because it’s fairly close to Yosemite, which is really what we wanted to start our trip with, but couldn’t get a reservation to actually camp inside the park.  Lana and I also stayed at Lake McClure earlier in the summer and enjoyed it.

After a leisurely packing process that saw filling up the RV for a week before departure, we eventually left just after the crack of noon.  This saw us pull into our campsite at Lake McClure in the early evening, leaving us enough time for a walk down to the water for some fishing (spoiler alert, the lake is apparently out of fish – again), a healthy dinner with all the right macros (this is a new thing for some of us since we were last blogging), and of course, our after dinner walk.

That’s about it for our stay at Lake McClure, it was a nice little overnight stop before our first real destination of the trip – Yosemite!

Plenty of nice shady RV spots at Lake McClure
While there were definitely zero fish in the lake, we did see a bunch of frogs
I’m not sure what we had for dinner, but I do know that it contained all the right macros
We saw this fox during our evening walk and I asked it what does it say? It preceded to slow blink at us like a petulant teenager who’s heard that joke one to many times, and then wandered off
