Texas is big! Real big! We’ve been driving through the state for the past 650 miles, with about 225 more before we hit Louisiana. Considering how late it is now and how far we’ve already driven today, I don’t think we’ll make it out of the state tonight, but we’re trying to see just how far we can get.
Last night we ended up pulling into the TA Travel Center in Wilcox, Arizona at about 2am local time, that was after putting in nearly 600 miles. It was just in time as both Lana and I were getting pretty tired. The boys had already been sleeping for a few hours. The only one who wasn’t either asleep or eager to be was Boomer. Apparently he had spent too much time chillaxing on the drive and was ready to party.
As we were approaching Willcox we were a bit worried about not being able to find a parking spot at the gas station since all the nearby rest stops were completely overflowing with semis pulled over for the night, but when we arrived we noticed they had a few open spots reserved just for RVs. That was a nice bonus as those weren’t mentioned in the reviews or obvious from the satellite photos.
In the morning, Lana woke up just after 6am local time and started driving us East. By the time I woke up a few hours later we were parked at a gas station just outside of El Paso. I had completely missed the last bit of Arizona and the 140 miles the 10 made its way through New Mexico. I’m not going to lie, I can certainly get used to traveling while I sleep! Once again, I was feeling quite proud of myself for tricking Lana into marrying me 15 years ago.
Some thoughts for today:
- Texas is real big, especially if you find yourself driving it’s full width, but I think I mentioned that already.
- Driving along the interstate in a major US city (El Paso) and being able to look into another country just a few hundred feet away was kind of interesting.
- Today we’ll be setting our record for most miles driven in a single day. Assuming we keep driving for a couple more hours we’ll have gone a bit over 1000 miles.
- I can sleep just fine in a moving RV.
- This was our third day in the RV without using our slide out. Things are tight. I have no doubt that when we finally put our slide out it’s going to feel like we’re living in a mansion.
As we’re approaching the last hour or two of our drive we’re trying to decide if we want to stop before we get to Houston or try to push past it before calling it a night.
