Have I mentioned my dislike of overnighting at Love’s? I guess you get what you pay for when it comes to free truck stop parking options. At least it felt safe, if not quiet. Did you know that refrigerated semi trucks need to run their engines all night to keep their load cold? Now I know too.
After making a pot of coffee we wasted no time getting back on the interstate, with the goal of arriving at our campsite at the Helena KOA by evening. This was where Lana was going to fly home from a couple of days later and phase 2 of the RV adventure was to begin.
Breakfast and a walk at Devil’s Creek Reservoir
An hour after leaving the Love’s we entered into Idaho and saw a sign for Devil’s Creek Reservoir and decided that even if we didn’t spend the night there we’d pull over to have breakfast there. There was even a little tree full of sour green apples which we plundered for road snacks.
Continuing to head north, we once again decided to skip the interstate for smaller highways, which was a good choice. Eventually it was time to stop for lunch, just as we were passing Henry’s Lake State Park, which is where we pulled over for a quick bite and a walk along the shore. We were still in Eastern Idaho, but it felt more like Montana already.
After another three hours of scenic driving through Idaho and Montana, we pulled into the Helena KOA. We spent the rest of the evening decompressing from the long drives by taking some walks around the neighborhood. It was warm, and there was a dramatic sunset, unfortunately that was due to a local forest fire, which caused a heavy layer of haze through the Helena Valley.
