This may be the first time an interstate rest stop gets it’s very own blog post. Last time we drove west on the I-80 through the Bonneville Salt Flats (on our first cross country trip) we passed what looked like a really cool rest area right on the flats. There were a large number of people out on the salt, both on foot and in their cars. I remember that we debated whether or not to turn around and stop, but we were still in the early stages of an 800+ mile drive, so we decided to press on.
This time we stopped. We didn’t really plan on it and didn’t try to time our transit for sunset, but that’s right about when we happened to be driving through. We had missed the actual sunset but the colors were still amazing, although as we parked we knew we didn’t have much light left. We ended up pulling over at the Eastbound Salt Flats Rest Area, and in case you don’t know this, that’s the crappy side. We quickly threw a leash on Boomer and sprinted across 4 lanes of interstate to the awesome side in order to experience the full magnificence of the Salt Flats in all their pastel glory.
There were a decent amount of people and even cars in the distance, making their way about the flats. In terms of taking their vehicles out on the salt, they were braver than us. Even if we had our RV on the westbound side, there’s no way we would have subjected it to the corrosive power of the salt, although the salt itself was very dry and almost concrete-like.
After enjoying the pretty side of the Salt Flats for a little longer we carefully made our way back across the interstate for a quick dinner in the RV before continuing on to Bonneville Seabase.
