Not only did we get to cool off after a string of 90 and 100 plus days, we actually got to reacquaint ourselves with pants and sweatshirts again! Driving west for about 4 hours saw the temperature drop by a very welcome 30 degrees and replaced desert with forest.
For the record, Rainbow Falls was the first time that Lana backed us into our campsite. I had originally started the process with Lana taking her usual spot outside and behind the RV to guide me in with various degrees of yelling, but it was so dark outside by the time we arrived, and the probability of there being monsters in the vicinity was just too high, so we ended up switching jobs.
Once again we were staying at a state park, but this one like many others, had no hookups. This meant that for two days we’d be strategically running the generator to keep the RV batteries charged and coffee brewing (our inverter gets very pissy if we run the coffee maker off batteries). At least the pleasant temperature meant that we didn’t need to run the AC. The cooler weather also meant that I could start working from outside the RV again. The one downside of this particular area was that while we had internet it wasn’t great and that did end up making us decide to leave the park for a Walmart parking lot early on our second and final day.
On our one full day at the park we did make due with the internet though. In this case bad internet meant a long delay when speaking up in meetings and some intermittent dropouts. During the adults lunch break we explored the park a bit, including the namesake Rainbow Falls, which were allegedly located in the part of the Chehalis River that ran through the park. There were falls, but no rainbows. It was still nice though. We took the same walk back to the river and around the park in the evening.
If anyone is wondering what the kids do while Lana and I work, it’s usually some sort of combination of video games, online chess camp, and exploring on their own (unfortunately in that order). They will also take Boomer on regular walks to keep him entertained with new sights and smells. They’re not complaining though, not even a little.
On the morning of our last day, right after breakfast, we left for the nearest Walmart and the promise of better interwebs. The setting wasn’t nearly as pretty, but in this case the Mbps made up for it. We also needed a bit of resupplying, so there was that too.
